Apply Now for the 2019-2020 AAGEN SES Development Program Now until January 15, 2019

Program seeks to prepare candidates for the highest level of government service.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 31) – It's time once again to submit your application for AAGEN's Senior Executive Service Development Program (SES DP) This one-year, tuition-free program aims to support the promotion of more Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) into senior executive positions in the federal government.

According to diversity research in 2011 by the Center for American Progress, "The projected ethnic, racial and gender makeup of the Senior Executive Service will not reflect that of the American workforce in 2030 and beyond." In response, AAGEN established the SES DP in March 2012 in cooperation with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI), the Office of Personnel Management, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The program directly supports two Presidential Executive Orders: First, EO 13811 reestablished WHIAAPI and mandated that the federal government "identify ways to foster the recruitment, career development, and advancement of AAPIs in the federal government." Then, EO 13583 established an initiative across the federal government to encourage diversity and inclusion in its workforce.

Qualified applicants must be at the GS-15 equivalent level or higher with at least one year of supervisor experience, or at the GS-14 equivalent level with at least 5 years of supervisor experience. Current federal government employees as well as non-federal government professionals are encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from both AAPIs and non-AAPIs who can demonstrate that they support the mission of SES DP to promote more AAPIs into leadership positions within the government.

Application materials include:

  • Online Application
  • Current resume
  • Executive Development Plan
  • Executive Core Qualifications
  • Up to two optional written references
Benefits of the program include executive development courses, application preparation and mock interviews, individual mentoring with an SES or Flag Officer, leadership training, public speaking tutorials, networking opportunities, and career counseling to develop the skills needed to compete for SES positions.

The upcoming SES DP will be held from April 2019 through May 2020 in the Washington, DC metro area. Participants should expect a quarterly time commitment of 2-3 days of classes and other sessions, plus one mentoring session. Additional activities, as assigned by the mentor, will be completed on the participant's own time.
